Readability

“able to be read easily”
— Merriam-Webster

I often have trouble figuring out what purpose an unreadable piece of design work is supposed to take on. Sometimes, I see my classmates’ work and simply cannot read what the text is supposed to be saying. I find that I can’t appreciate text and typography that is obscured to the point of unreadability. I’ve tried to experiment with unreadable text myself, and I understand the place of ornament-style typefaces, but, as I’ve said, I can’t understand what I can’t see. I need the information presented to me in order to understand it. If text has been purposely made unreadable, I feel like an aspect of accessibility has been taken away and the work ends up making me feel alienated.
