Materiality

“The term materiality relates to the physical properties and qualities of an object.”
— Bestley & Noble, 2018

I really love thinking about the materials I use in a project. I mean, have you seen my ridiculous pile of paper? That being said, once I find a material I like, I continue to use it. I am very particular about only Riso printing on Southworth linen paper, I just love how the ink sits in the texture of the paper. I want the sensory experience of holding a physical object made with materials with textures I enjoy rather than using whatever paper is in the studio printers or working in a digital space. This goes beyond the work I create. For example, I’m currently eating dinner with a children’s fork because I prefer the way the smooth, rounded, plastic handle feels in my hand than that of a typical adult’s fork.
